Forms &
Ranking

Resource
Eventually, we will be posting video clips of forms, techniques, and other fun stuff.  For now, use this
page as a checklist to guide your hyung completion in regards to rank progression. Thank you!
All Times Are A Guidepost, some students may take longer to achieve certain ranks.
RED RIVER TANG SOO DO
RANKING STRUCTURE & HYUNG REQUIREMENTS
White Belt - 10th Gup --> 8th Gup
The day you begin our program, we consider you a 10th gup.  Gup is a grading term that is used for colored
belt students, and you will be ranked from 10th to 1st gup, until you achieve the rank of Black/Midnight Blue
belt.
Forms that must be mastered to move on to the next rank:
Kee Cho Il Bu, Kee Cho Eebu, Kee Cho Sam Bu, and Pyong Ahn Chodan
Blue Belt - 7th Gup --> 4th Gup
The time spent at the blue belt level is generally the longest.  Before testing for 3rd Gup, students must
master not only the previous forms and techniques, but their new material that includes:
Pyong Ahn Ee dan, Pyong Ahn Sam dan, and Pyong Ahn Sa dan. It is not unlikely, that students who are
progressing quickly may also be introduced to the fifth Pyong Ahn form, and possibly the first Naihanchi.
Red Belt - 3rd Gup -->1st Gup
Students at this level are seeking to achieve Dan (Say "Don") grading, which is the term associated with
non-colored belt rank, or black belt ranking.  As we groom a student for this time in their training, keep in mind
that no time frame can be set as to how long any one particular student could spend at this level.  Forms
students should expect to master at this level include:
Pyong Ahn Oh Dan, Naihanchi Chodan, and Bassai
When testing for 1st Dan Rank, you will be expected to do so in front of a board of examiners, consisting of
the instructors of as few as three Federation Tang Soo Do school instructors or more.
Black Belt      1st Dan and beyond....
Now that you have mastered the forms up to this level, the forms you learn to advance beyond are not always
presented in the same manner.  You generally will follow the current Dan Grading criteria of Master Dennis
McHenry, and the forms he requires for advancement.
The Midnight Blue Belt
A long held tradition in the schools of Tang Soo Do, this belt color dates back to the founder's original school
of the Moo Duk Kwan.  Tang Soo Do will always be the pioneering art that began using this color for its Dan
ranked members, and currently is the only one using it. (Lets hope it stays that way!) You will be presented
with the Midnight Blue Belt by your instructor.  The significance of the color is great....
